Here is another with a few more good tips%26gt; Introducing Your Puppy to Your Adult Dog: http://www.phsspca.org/training/puppy_in鈥?/a>Do you have advice for a couple worried about introducing a new puppy to their older dog?
Okay dogs get jealous very easily and will try to attact the puppy if they feel that they arent loved anymore, Introduce them in a mutril area of the house, somewhere the old dogs dont think is theirs( eg. laundry, bathroom ect.) Let them playn and see how it goes, But always remember to always give the older dogs move attension for the first couple of weeks and them all the same amount of love and afection after that.Do you have advice for a couple worried about introducing a new puppy to their older dog?
I have just done this!! and with an older dog who has social issues and CANT STAND (!!) other dogs!! but we did it and now they loooove each other and will not leave each other alone!!
ok, firstly, if the older dog has a 'special spot' in the house, honor that. eg: my older one (lilie) sleeps on the bed. it is her spot. she was funny about the little one even being in the house, so the last thing i was going to do was let the little one (frankie) in her spot.
introduce the slowly, let then sniff each other and expplore each other. if the older one gets angry and growls, let it. it is a warning and the puppy should be able to decifer this. dont let it go any further than growling though.
put something that smells like the puppy on or near the older ones bed so it becomes used ot its scent.
puppies learn fast and older dogs are able to teach them. dont worry about it, before too long ur older one will teach the pup its personal boundaries and the pup wont step over them.
they will be best friends before no time!! dont worry about it, it will be odd for maybe a week, but all will settle down.
good luck!! =)
When we did the same thing, we let the dogs first meet on neutral ground. That prevented my older dog from taking a territorial stance. Second we we kept constant control over both dogs during teh meeting and when we first got home. During the introduction period at home it is important to leave the older dog feeling like he has a higher rank. By feeding him firsy letting him out first etc. The thing that worked the best was walking the two together it really help to from a bond
We JUST did this.. but with 2 older dogs.. and 3 older cats... what a trip...LOL
paitent's... on both your part and that of your older dog... they are NOT going to like the puppy at all for a bit.. but they WILL come around... Our little guy has been in the house now for 2 months.. and our female lab has finally started to TRY and play with the little rat terrier... our male lab.. well he is still a bit growly.. BUT has NEVER biten at the puppy...
The cat's are a totally different story.. they feel the puppy is an intrusion and that he should stay out of their way.. and since they have all been declawed.. well you can guess the sounds I am hearing ALOT...
Good luck with the introductions.... and remember.. the less nervous YOU are .. the better things will be...
OHHH one last thing.. this is what we did when we intro'd all our cat's to each other.. take a towel... rub it all over the older dog.... take it to the puppy.. let the puppy get the smell of the older dog.. then rub the towel all over the puppy.. take it back to the older dog..... he then get's the new puppies smell as well.. it may help to ease some of their tension...%26lt;w%26gt;
Introduce your new puppy and older dog on neutral ground.
It doesn鈥檛 have to be far away but it must be some place your older dog doesn鈥檛 feel territorial about.
It also helps to feed them separately to avoid competition.
We introduced or younger pup to an older much larger breed of dog but we made it seem like it was a present for our older dog....he got excited and then we put the puppy in front of him, he sniffed and then started to play with it... it all depends on the temperment of the dog but...You must not give the puppy more attention than the older dog, that's when the jealously and mean actions begin.
I got a T cup Chihuahua sevral years ago as a puppy, I had a greman Police dog and my breeder told me to rub a towel on my older dog to get his sent , then rub your new puppy down with the towel take the puppy (in a crate) to the room that your other dog spends most of his time in, . Let your older dog sniff till his hearts content. When he walks away and seems to be satisfied and no longer curious. It should be ok to get the puppy out. This worked for me. Stay with the puppy till you are ABSOLUTELY sure your older dog is ok with it! Hope this helps.
hi, you,ve got to give the older dog lots of attention so that he/she still feels special, if you devote all your time and attention to the new puppy your other dog will feel left out, and is prone to attacking the new puppy. its hard you,ll have to try and make both dogs equal in the amount of attention you give them so you don,t have prombles.
