I would highly recommend purchasing the film Adopted. It is pricey but the film and the companion educational guide DVD are a very good start:

Rose Garlands,
This is my favorite site for helping to explain the skills and qualities of a good adoptive parent and what agencies look for: http://www.adoptioninbrightonandhove.org鈥?/a>
We adopted our daughter ten years ago and the approval process touched on each of the major issues outlined on the website. One of the most important things you need to embrace is honesty, respect for the child's heritage and natural family and keeping your promises. If you enter into an open adoption, but all means keep your word and don't shut the door.
Before my parents adopted my sister and I, they worked with Hannah's Prayer, which is both an adoption agency and a group that finds temporary homes for young pregnant women and babies that are waiting for adoption paperwork and such. It was how my parents met my birthmother and my sister's birthmother, and becoming host families for groups like these are a good experience for you and your SO as well as a sign of good potential families to the adoption agencies.
This website outlines some of the things you should have in mind when you are ready to adopt!

Congratulations and good luck! You are planning on doing something wonderful for a child that needs a second chance at life. A real parent is a parent who lovingly raises a child with much care and patience in a family setting. Again, congratulations, and I wish you two the best!
Patience, haha. If you want to adopt a baby it can take years.
If you want to adopt overseas...you'll need lots of money. They can cost upwards of 20,000+. Don't forget about legal fees.
This is a canadian website but very useful to explain the adoption process and what you require: www.canadaadopts.com
You'll also need a home study done by a social worker, who will interview you and determine if your home is suitable or not. That can take up to a year to complete.
Good luck in the future!
Are you adopting internationally? I would think with two kids already you would have a better chance that way. Start saving money now. We mistakenly thought that we could get alot of grants to help with adoption expenses. Most never pay out and if they do, it's not until you're almost done. So you have to have a lot of money up front.
Keep your debt under control. They look at your total net worth when doing the home study. And don't move. It makes things alot harder.
